Mansfield Street sits within one of London's most tightly controlled conservation areas. Working within the constraints of a Grade II listed building, every intervention — from the routing of new services to the specification of finishes — required listed building consent and the lightest possible hand.
The palette was set by Banda Interiors: limewash walls in warm, chalky tones that shift with the light throughout the day, distressed Versailles parquet underfoot, and travertine marble throughout the bathrooms and kitchen. Melner's role was to realise that vision in a building that demanded total precision — no two walls are plumb, no two floor levels identical. Every piece of joinery was scribed and fitted on-site.
The structural programme included the careful removal of a non-original partition on the first floor to open the principal reception rooms, the installation of a concealed steel frame above, and full replacement of all M&E services — without disturbing the original cornicing, shutters, or sash windows that make this house what it is.
